In sectors including food, biotech, pharmaceutical, and semiconductor production that demand hygienic surfaces, the quality of a machined surface’s finish is crucial. There are several definitions for Surface Finish, and this Tech Talk aims to provide a basic rundown of the most used words. International Standards ISO 4287 and ISO 4288, as well as American Standard ASME B46.1 2002, Surface Texture, contain definitions for most parameters, measurement methodologies, and filtering information. Arithmetic Average Roughness, or Ra, is the most widely used surface roughness metric. In essence, it represents the mean line’s average height of imperfections in the roughness component. Ra offers a straightforward value for decisions to accept or reject.
If not otherwise noted, it is a drawing’s default parameter and is present in even the most basic measuring devices. Ra is not a very good surface discriminator since it cannot distinguish between “scratched” and “spiky” surfaces that have the same Ra.
A maximum roughness of 10 or 15 μ-inch is produced by an electro-polished ID finish, which is the highest quality of sanitary finishes. The majority of applications requiring extremely high purity employ these electro-polished products.
